Layered Boozy Milkshakes: A Patriotic Cocktail
If you follow my posts on SoFabFood, then you know how much we love our cocktails. That’s probably why my blog is called Thyme for Cocktails! Seriously though, my family loves to entertain with great food and fun drinks.
Many of my concoctions make great mocktails too, like these Layered Boozy Milkshakes. You can make them as is for the adults or omit the alcohol for a creamy treat anyone would love.
With Memorial Day right around the corner, I really wanted to make something creative to showcase the holiday. Most of my cocktails are made with fresh seasonal fruits and herbs instead of store-bought mixes. I am a farmers market junkie and there is nothing better than supporting your local community!
Fresh berries are coming into season so naturally I reached for strawberries and blueberries. After that I was stumped on what to make. There was a vague idea for a layered cocktail floating around my brain, but I wasn’t sure how to pull it off.
Then my son asked me if I wanted to go with him to grab an ice cream cone. He graduates from high school next week and ships out for the Army in August. We have been spending as much mom/son time as we can lately!
While we were snacking on our cones and chatting, it hit… Why not make Layered Boozy Milkshakes?! Strawberries and whiskey for the red layer, plain vanilla with amaretto for the white, and blueberries with a splash of orange liqueur for the blue layer. These would be fun for the Fourth of July too.
The trick is to let each layer set up in the freezer before adding the next one so that they don’t bleed together; even though that isn’t exactly a horrible prospect. Pour the milkshake layers into your glass over the back of a spoon to help with the layering too.
If you are skipping the booze, add your favorite dairy/non-dairy substitute; i.e. milk, almond milk, etc…

Enjoy~
